Larian Studios Reveal a Fresh Divinity, Calling it Their Most Ambitious RPG to Date

The buzz about the recent awards show was significant, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious image of a strange statue. The mystery has now been solved. Larian Studios is working on a completely new Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer that included striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very descent into chaos.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian warned that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This phrasing hints that the team might be crafting a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another turn-based title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it kicked off the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, branching plots, and complex character building—qualities that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities that are viable by choosing a specific type of character with a personal story.

The series is also famously open-ended, letting players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be solved in diverse methods, often in surprising fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by using the world itself in a clever way.

The Journey Continues

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can get ready for more where that came from in this groundbreaking franchise.
