Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was found guilty of planning a armed takeover in the ninth month and sentenced more than over two decades in prison, but he remained under home detention pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after recent developments were revealed.

This encompassed trying to remove his ankle monitor and a summons to a demonstration that could "allow for a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the arrest, the judge said intelligence from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the protest called by his son.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who holds office as a senator, called for a gathering of his followers near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or observe everything from your phone there on your sofa? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so followers could offer prayers for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the magistrate's decision was the potential of the former president's "relocation to diplomatic missions near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a record of organizing to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

The court filing emphasizes that the American diplomatic mission in the capital, Brasilia, is situated around 13km from the former president's residence.

International Reactions

The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative United States President Donald Trump, causing him to implement a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.

Bolsonaro is being held in a national police facility in Brasilia and will undergo a imprisonment assessment on the next day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with digital surveillance.

They also asked that he be permitted to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he needed ongoing care for lung conditions and other illnesses.

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was found guilty of heading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the national vote to his ideological adversary, Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a scheme which included plans to kill Lula and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it didn't receive the support of the armed forces officials. The current president was took office without problem on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on the eighth of January, thousands of his followers invaded and destroyed official structures in the federal district, Brasília.

The police stepped in and around 1,500 people were arrested.

The justices found that the protesters had been provoked by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, restore order and bring him back to power.

At the period, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also prohibited from running for public office until 2060 - eight years later after the end of his sentence.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him competing in the 2026 presidential election.
