Individuals Stopping Slimming Injections Put On Weight Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users purchasing such treatments must be informed of the danger of fast weight regain when the treatment ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a return to starting mass within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Approaches

The study, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.

Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting typically see a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the amplified weight return.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Chronic Condition?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"It was like a trigger flipping and you're instantly starving," recalled a patient.

This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated lifestyle changes.
